How To Become A Tyrant: A Crash Course In Conquering Through Cruelty

Television show review! If you haven’t seen Netflix’s, “How to Become a Tyrant,” you’ll enjoy my quick review of the limited series. If you have seen it, I hope you’ll have your own opinion, too!

With "How To Become A Tyrant" Netflix is revisiting its root. It was the docuseries like these that made the streaming giant a game-changing platform.

The creators of the show, Bell Pasht and Josh Bekhor, decided to work on it after seeing a huge shift in the global political climate. One of the biggest victories of the 21st century is the predominant democratic rule in most countries.

But since the last few years, there seems to be an active interest in fascism and dictatorship. This docuseries is a reality check for those who are romanticizing the concept of “one man ruling it all”, nothing good ever comes out of it.

Each episode is a step-by-step guide on how to emerge as the victorious tyrant!

While the events described here are widely known, it’s the humorous tone that will make this a rather easy watch. The series could have been more interesting if the second half of it would have focused on the present scenario and the alarming similarities between the two centuries.

The new Netflix show is a six-episode long recap of how the most notorious dictators like Hitler, Saddam, Stalin, Idi Amin, Gaddafi, North Korea’s Kim family came into power and ruled over the masses. Pasht and Bekhor were clear that they don't want to create a regular documentary that only narrated the incidents and showed archival footage. To completely justify the storytelling they added Peter Dinklage’s snarky narration and over-the-top animation sequences.

Like how to defeat your enemies, instill fear in people, manipulate your followers and control the media narrative, etc.

This also would have given more room to the writers for a more tight screenplay.

The animation would have also benefitted a lot from the inclusion of current political affairs. All-in-all if you ever doubted the phrase history repeats itself, then this series will give you enough proof to rethink your stance.
